We met Lynda Wilner over 4 years ago at a health care facility after Rick’s stroke. He has right hemiplegia, aphasia, and apraxia. Lynda worked with him for about two years, and we consider her a true “miracle worker”.

Rick had few communication skills and was very frustrated. His comprehension is good, but he could not express his needs or wants.

She very patiently and thoroughly worked with him to assess his abilities and needs. When one process did not work she very easily tried another and another. There was never a time that she didn’t have something else to try. She suggested a laptop computer (he was already computer literate) and found various programs for him to use. He could work on these on his own and did a good job.

Then she suggested an iPad. That has been wonderful! Lynda found APPS for him to practice speech skills by himself. Now he can repeat almost any word. She also found an APP for pictures so that he can point to family members, activities, clothes, emotions, etc. She even set up a portable food notebook so he can point to what he wants to eat at meals.

Lynda also found fun for him on the iPad. He gets several videos each day which he loves to share with family and staff. He too can join in the conversation now. He also plays a lot of solitaire.

Although Rick has little spontaneous speech, Lynda has taught him alternative ways to communicate. He uses gesturing and iPad very effectively, and his frustration has decreased greatly.

Lynda still stops in to visit with Rick and just “chat”. We all think that she is the kindest, most innovative, patient, and dedicated person we know. A special force sent her to Rick in his time of need, and she has never failed to exceed all our expectations.
