Body Language Lessons from the Masters

As someone who specializes in body language's affect on communication, the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta was the perfect setting to use these skills. As we sat on the green watching the players hit their approach shots from 150-200 yards away, we couldn't easily track the ball flight. However, by observing their posture after they struck the ball, you could see if the golfer had confidence in his shot. Did he lean to the left or right searching for the ball, slump over with frustration, or did he hold his swing posture? That often predicted where the ball landed.

Observing the golfer's posture as he spoke with his caddy revealed much about his confidence level on that hole. I was also struck by the stride and posture of the players as they walked the course,  Some communicated whether they were still focused or whether they were resigned to their unsuccessful outcome.

What are people reading in your body posture? They can read it from yards away, whether you're playing golf, giving a presentation, accepting an award, networking, or interviewing. Remember, it's not always what you say.... your body language will communicate volumes!

Next time you are at a sports event, check out how they project power and confidence without saying a word!
